Aviation boosterism, utopian schemes, and oddball social theory in plain talk.

1869 – 1954 · United Kingdom – United States  |  1 book  |  Popular now: Born Again

Alfred William Lawson (1869–1954) was an English-born American figure whose career spanned professional baseball, early aviation, and utopian social theory. After pitching briefly in the majors and spending years in the minor leagues as player, manager, and promoter, he redirected his energy to flying and to grand public projects.

As an aviation advocate and entrepreneur, Lawson edited two early trade journals—Fly (founded 1908) and, after a move to New York, Aircraft—and later formed companies in Wisconsin to build trainers and ambitious multi-passenger craft. His ventures helped popularize commercial air travel even as some projects faltered.

Lawson also wrote widely. His utopian novel Born Again (1904) lays out the ideas he would call Lawsonomy—a sweeping program of social and economic reform presented through fiction.

In the 1940s he established the University of Lawsonomy in Des Moines to promote his system; a later iteration persisted in Wisconsin under followers. The effort underscores Lawson’s drive to turn publishing into persuasion and ideas into institutions.
