Early professional woman writer; sharp comedy, espionage, and colonial critique.
1640 – 1689 · United Kingdom | 1 book | Popular now: Oroonoko
Aphra Behn was an English playwright, poet and novelist. She is considered one of the first professional women writers in the English language and laid the foundation for the growth of women in literature.
Her most notable and well-known work is the novel Oroonoko (1688), which deals with issues such as slavery and race based on the writer's own experience in Suriname.
She also wrote plays, including The Rover (1677), which is full of witty dialogue and his exploration of gender differences.
She was ahead of her time, which provoked much criticism from the most traditionalist and moralistic sectors. Her work was crucial to the development of feminist thought, which came some time later, thanks to her pioneering role as a writer in a field that had previously been the exclusive domain of men.
Aphra Behn mixes stage speed with political nerve. Wit, desire, and power meet in plays and prose that still provoke debate about freedom and trade. Read her today to enjoy verve and to discuss empire, gender, and authorship with primary sources not rumor.
