Charles Gore

Anglican theology for public life; clarity on faith, ethics, and social duty.

Charles Gore was a bishop of the Church of England and one of the most important and influential Anglican theologians of the 20th century.

He was first bishop of Worcester, and later of Birmingham and Oxford. He helped to reconcile the view of the church with the scientific discoveries of the time and its interpretation of the faith.

He published a series of theological books including his analysis of the Sermon on the Mount.

Faith with civic spine in 2026

Charles Gore argues that belief must face work, wages, and law. He writes with patience and civic purpose, refusing both retreat and rage. Read him to join charity with structure, and to consider how doctrine aims at justice as well as devotion.
