David Francis Bacon

David Francis Bacon, an American physician and writer, was born in Prospect, Connecticut, on 30 November 1813. He studied at Yale College, graduating from Yale Medical School in 1836. Shortly afterwards, the American Colonization Society sent him to Liberia as the principal colonial physician.
Upon returning from Africa, Bacon published Wanderings on the Seas and Shores of Africa (1843), a work based on his observations of the West African coast. He also published Lives of the Apostles and contributed to contemporary periodicals. He lived in New York for much of his life and was involved in political affairs, notably supporting Henry Clay.
He died in New York City on 23 January 1865, aged 51. He is mainly remembered as a physician and author whose writings combined religious, historical and travel interests.
