George Moore

Naturalist candor about art, faith, and desire in a changing society.

George Augustus Moore was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, poet, art critic, memoirist and dramatist. He originally wanted to be a painter, and studied art in Paris during the 1870s. There, he befriended many of the leading French artists and writers of the day.

Art and candor in 2026

George Moore writes the awkward truth of growth. Studios, parlors, and roads test what belief and love can bear. The tone is unsentimental but not cruel. Read him to think about artistic honesty, about class and religion without haze, and about choice when comfort and courage pull apart.
