M. R. James

Quietly devastating ghost stories where scholarship meets dread.

Montague Rhodes James was an English author, medievalist scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge, and Eton College, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

He is best remembered for his ghost stories, which some regard as among the best in the genre. James redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichés of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings.

Cold shivers by lamplight in 2026

M R James makes restraint terrifying. A leaflet, a sketch, a whisper shifts the room and the chill arrives sideways. Suggestion beats spectacle and ordinary places turn uncanny. Read him by lamplight to learn how minimal means carry maximum fear.
