Satire and the uncanny; petty power exposed while reality slips sideways.
1809 – 1852 · Ukraine – Russia | 2 books | Popular now: Dead Souls
Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol was a Russian novelist, short story writer and playwright of Ukrainian origin.
With brilliant humor and sharp social criticism, Gogol depicted the hypocrisy, bureaucracy, and foibles of the society of his time. Mixing the absurd with the fantastic, Gogol creates stories that transcend the boundaries of reality and offer a unique and fascinating vision of life.
One of his greatest works, and the one that best exemplifies his style, is Dead Souls, in which Gogol uses grotesque characters and situations to expose the flaws and incongruities of society.
Although not as well known or popular as Fyodor Dostoevsky or Leo Tolstoy, his work has undoubtedly had an influence on Russian literature. Dostoevsky himself claimed that all Russian writers "came out of Gogol's mantle".
Nikolai Gogol makes the ordinary strange enough to see. Clerks roads and coats reveal how systems shape souls and how laughter can cut. The stories feel modern in their mix of dread and joke. Read him today to spot small tyrannies and to keep humor honest.
