Stanley G. Weinbaum

Stanley G. Weinbaum was an American science fiction writer whose career was remarkably brief but highly influential. He achieved immediate recognition with A Martian Odyssey, published in 1934, a story that helped transform the portrayal of extraterrestrial life in science fiction by presenting alien creatures with their own biology, intelligence, and ways of thinking rather than simply depicting them as variations of humans.

Although Weinbaum died only about a year and a half after the publication of A Martian Odyssey, he produced a remarkable body of imaginative fiction. His best-known works include its Martian sequel Valley of Dreams, the pioneering virtual-reality story Pygmalion's Spectacles, and the Professor van Manderpootz stories The Worlds of If, The Ideal, and The Point of View. His fiction frequently explored alien intelligence, alternative realities, futuristic technology, and unusual scientific ideas.

Several of Weinbaum's works are now in the public domain in the United States and available through Project Gutenberg. Its collection includes A Martian Odyssey, Valley of Dreams, Pygmalion's Spectacles, The Worlds of If, The Ideal, The Point of View, and The Dark Other.
