A Sicilian Romance is a Gothic novel written by Ann Radcliffe and first published in 1790.
Set in a decaying castle on the coast of Sicily, the story follows two young sisters who live under the authority of their cold and tyrannical father. When one of them falls in love with a nobleman, she is threatened with an unwanted marriage arranged for wealth and power.
Her attempt to escape leads through ruined passages, isolated monasteries, and wild landscapes filled with danger. Meanwhile, mysterious sounds and unexplained events within the castle gradually reveal a dark family secret hidden for many years.
Blending romance, suspense, and Gothic terror, the novel explores parental cruelty, forced marriage, imprisonment, and the struggle for personal freedom. It is an early example of Radcliffe’s atmospheric style and her use of apparently supernatural mysteries that eventually receive rational explanations.
"Towards the close of the sixteenth century, this castle was in the possession of Ferdinand, fifth marquis of Mazzini, and was for some years the principal residence of his family. He was a man of a voluptuous and imperious character. To his first wife, he married Louisa Bernini, second daughter of the Count della Salario, a lady yet more distinguished for the sweetness of her manners and the gentleness of her disposition, than for her beauty."
