Dagon is a horror short story written by H. P. Lovecraft and originally published in 1919.

The story is narrated in first person by a naval officer who escapes from his German captors in a boat.

During the voyage, he arrives on an undiscovered continent littered with fish corpses, where he discovers a secret that drives him to the brink of insanity...

The story was written in the context of the First World War. Inspiration came to Lovecraft in the most unexpected way: through a dream in which he saw volcanic islands inhabited by strange fish-headed creatures. Similar creatures would appear in other works by the author, such as The Shadow over Innsmouth.

"I am writing this under an appreciable mental strain, since by tonight I shall be no more. Penniless, and at the end of my supply of the drug which alone makes life endurable, I can bear the torture no longer; and shall cast myself from this garret window into the squalid street below."
