De profundis is a letter written by Oscar Wilde from prison to his lover and published in 1905, years after the writer's death.

Written by Wilde to Lord Alfred Douglas, his lover, during the prison sentence decreed to Wilde for sodomy because the relationship between the two had been made public. It was written at the end of his imprisonment and the reason for it was that contact between him and Douglas had been interrupted.

The letter begins by recounting Wilde's lifestyle, which bore no resemblance to the society of the time, and which led to his condemnation and imprisonment. He criticizes his lover's vanity and blames himself for being weak and being carried away by his desires.

The letter goes on to expose the spiritual development he experiences during his stay in prison and even compares himself to Jesus Christ, whom he describes as a romantic artist.
