Faust is a play written by Faust and published in two parts in 1808 and 1832.

The play is written in verse and in the form of a theatrical dialog. However, it was intended from the beginning to be read rather than performed, due to the complexity and variety of scenarios that appear in the play.

The first part begins with Dr. Faustus, a scholar who believes that he has reached the pinnacle of knowledge and happiness and has no motivation to continue living. Faced with this discouragement, he considers suicide as a way to escape his despair.

In the face of this despair, Mephistopheles appears, disguised as a dog, to trick him into betting his soul on achieving total satisfaction. Faust will hesitate whether or not to accept the proposal...

Faust's monologues are sublime, especially in the first part. Deep and sincere, they offer a series of complex reflections with powerful philosophical ideas, historical characters, etc.

"Night.
Faust discovered sitting restless at his desk, in a narrow high-vaulted Gothic chamber.
Faust.
There now, I’ve toiled my way quite through
Law, Medicine, and Philosophy,
And, to my sorrow, also thee,
Theology, with much ado;
And here I stand, poor human fool,
As wise as when I went to school."
