Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented is a novel by Thomas Hardy published in 1891. It was initially censored for challenging the sexual mores of the time.
Tess of the d'Urbervilles takes place in the south of England and tells the story through Tess. She is descended from a rather impoverished English aristocratic family.
Forced by an aristocrat and permanently judged by a society with too strict morals, Tess rebels and tries to be independent in search of happiness, since she is unable to understand why there is so much hypocrisy when judging the behavior of different sexes.
The book is ranked number 26 in the BBC's "The Big Read" poll. His mentions in the popular "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy have given the novel a second youth.
