Fantasy Satire The Passage of Time The Absurdity of Social Norms Identity and Alienation
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a short story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and originally published in 1922.
Benjamin Button is a boy born in the American city of Baltimore who has the physical appearance of a 70-year-old man and is able to speak and reason like a person of that age.
As Benjamin grows older, he grows physically younger. The story focuses on how this strange situation affects Benjamin's life and the people around him.
The years go by but it's all trouble for poor Benjamin. No one believes him when he tells his true age and so he has to deal with the rejection of society, the disbelief of doctors and the skepticism of his family. As a result, Benjamin is forced to live a lonely and isolated life, unable to enjoy the company of others.
Despite all the difficulties, Benjamin does not lose hope and, at the end of his life, he manages to find happiness. The story ends with a reflection on the importance of accepting things as they are and not allowing life's negative circumstances to prevent us from enjoying what really matters.
"As long ago as 1860 it was the proper thing to be born at home. At present, so I am told, the high gods of medicine have decreed that the first cries of the young shall be uttered upon the anesthetic air of a hospital, preferably a fashionable one".
