The Old Wives' Tale is a novel written by Arnold Bennett and originally published in 1908. It is considered one of Bennett's best books.
Set between Burslem and Paris in the early 1840s, the novel follows two completely different sisters, Constancie and Sophia Baines, from their youth to adulthood and old age, over a time span of 70 years.
Constance is kind, gentle and loving while Sophia is sophisticated, adventurous and curious. While the former prefers the warmth of home and a quiet life, the latter is determined to travel the world.
While one sister remains in Burslem, the other must move to Paris due to circumstances beyond her control. The plot will revolve around the historical events of the period and the profound changes taking place in late 19th century society.
The book offers some very interesting historical details about the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71 or the details of the city of Burslem.
The book is part of The Five Towns Series, Volume V.
