The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath is a horror novella written by H. P. Lovecraft and published posthumously in 1943.
The story follows dreamer Randolph Carter into the vast Dreamlands after a forbidden vision of a radiant sunset city is withdrawn from his sleep. Determined to reclaim that vision, he journeys through enchanted forests, moonlit ports, and perilous plateaus, seeking the hidden seat of the gods where he can plead for its return.
Along the way he meets talking cats, merchant princes, ghouls, and darker powers, as the road to Kadath twists into a surreal odyssey across shifting dreamscapes and toward a truth he both longs for and fears.
Lovecraft layers the tale with cosmic wonder threaded with dread, exploring the lure of forbidden knowledge and the thin boundary between desire and delusion. Carter’s pursuit of a perfect city becomes a meditation on what we seek in dreams under the gaze of an indifferent, immeasurable cosmos.
Told in episodic adventures that stitch together a mythic geography, the story culminates in a revelatory twist that redefines the quest itself. The result is a grand, atmospheric travelogue of the unconscious, a cornerstone of Lovecraft’s Dream Cycle that celebrates the power of memory and longing even as it warns of their peril.
"Three times Randolph Carter dreamed of the marvelous city, and three times was he snatched away while still he paused on the high terrace above it."
