The Feather Pillow by Horacio Quiroga — cover

The Feather Pillow

The Feather Pillow is a short story by Horacio Quiroga, first published in 1907 and later included in his collection Tales of Love, Madness and Death.

The story follows Alicia and Jordán, a newly married couple living in a cold and imposing house. Their relationship is marked by emotional distance, and Alicia gradually becomes weak and ill from a mysterious sickness that doctors are unable to explain.

As her condition worsens, Alicia suffers hallucinations and loses strength day after day until she eventually dies. After her death, a servant discovers that her feather pillow is unusually heavy and, upon examining it, finds a monstrous parasite hidden inside.

The creature had been feeding on Alicia's blood while she slept, causing her unexplained decline. Through its disturbing final revelation, the story combines psychological tension and horror while exploring themes of isolation, illness, and hidden danger.

"Her honeymoon was one long shudder. Fair-haired, angelic, and shy, she found the girlish fancies she had dreamed of as a bride frozen by her husband's hard nature."
