The Forged Coupon is a novella written by Leo Tolstoy between 1902 and 1904 and published posthumously in 1911.
The story begins when a young student alters the value of a coupon so that he can obtain money to repay a small debt. What appears to be a minor dishonest act sets off a chain of unexpected consequences, affecting the lives of numerous people and eventually contributing to theft, violence, and murder.
Divided into two parts, the novella first shows how one harmful action can spread from person to person, creating suffering far beyond its original cause. The second part reverses this pattern, exploring how compassion, forgiveness, and moral awakening can also influence others and lead toward redemption.
Through these interconnected stories, Tolstoy examines the consequences of human actions and the struggle between good and evil. The work reflects his later religious and moral ideas, emphasizing personal responsibility and the possibility that acts of kindness can transform the lives of others.
"The whole time he was lying in the gutter Stepan saw continually before his eyes the thin, kindly, and frightened face of Maria Semenovna, and seemed to hear her voice. "How can you?" she went on saying in his imagination, with her peculiar lisping voice."
