The Outsider is a horror short story written by H. P. Lovecraft and originally published in 1926.

The story is told in the first person by a man who lives a dreary and lonely life in a large, dark castle where there is barely a trace of light.

He remembers nothing of his life and knows no one. The only thing he knows about the outside world is what he reads.

One day he decides to leave the castle by climbing the tower to look at the moon. But when he gets to the top, he discovers that he was on the ground and he hears in the distance the sound of people in another castle and decides to go closer to see...
