The Red Badge of Courage

The Red Badge of Courage is a war novel written by Stephen Crane and originally published in 1895. It is the author's most important and well-known novel.

The novel takes place during the American Civil War and tells the story of Henry Fleming, an 18-year-old Union Army private who flees the battlefield out of fear. This plunges him into deep shame for his act and he tries to injure himself, a "red badge of courage" to prove that he has been there and not look like a coward. In the next battle, Henry will be the flag bearer.

The Red Badge of Courage deals with themes such as heroism, cowardice or the maturation of the human being. The book was a great success on its release, becoming a bestseller, and has been adapted into a film several times.
