The Turn of the Screw is a novel written by Henry James and published in 1898.

The book tells the story of a young governess who begins to care for two orphaned children in an old Victorian mansion. Although at first it seemed like a nice job, things soon get complicated, as the children live traumatized due to the love affair between the previous governess and the children's uncle, the book hinting that there was some abuse. Said governess dies some time later.

The new governess, trying to help the children, begins to hear strange voices and sounds around the mansion, and even sees the dead image of the previous governess.

The book directly addresses illegitimate relationships between servants, with sexual details, to the astonishment of the new governess, with a more reserved and conservative character.
