The Vampyre

The Vampyre; a Tale is a short story written by John William Polidori and first published in 1819. It is considered one of the earliest and most influential works of vampire fiction in English literature.

The story follows a young Englishman who becomes fascinated by the mysterious and aristocratic Lord Ruthven. The two travel through Europe together, but strange events gradually reveal a dark and deadly nature hidden behind Ruthven’s elegant appearance.

After witnessing violence, mysterious deaths, and Ruthven’s apparent return from the dead, the young man realizes that his companion is a supernatural predator who preys upon those around him. Bound by a promise of secrecy, he struggles to prevent further tragedy as Ruthven moves ever closer to his own family.

Polidori transformed the vampire from a creature of folklore into a sophisticated, seductive, and dangerous aristocratic figure. This portrayal had a lasting influence on later Gothic literature and helped shape the image of the vampire that would eventually appear in works such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

"THE superstition upon which this tale is founded is very general in the East. Among the Arabians it appears to be common: it did not, however, extend itself to the Greeks until after the establishment of Christianity; and it has only assumed its present form since the division of the Latin and Greek churches; at which time, the idea becoming prevalent, that a Latin body could not corrupt if buried in their territory, it gradually increased, and formed the subject of many wonderful stories, still extant, of the dead rising from their graves, and feeding upon the blood of the young and beautiful."
