Charles Waddell Chesnutt was an American writer, most notable for his political activism and his novels addressing complex issues of racial and social identity in the post-Civil War southern states.

He was the son of freed colored slaves and, although his complexion was white due to European ancestry, he never chose to be identified as a white man even though he was entitled to it.
