David Hume was a Scottish philosopher, historian, economist and essayist, considered one of the most important figures of Scottish empiricism and the Scottish Enlightenment.
Born in Edinburgh, Hume grew up in a modest family and showed a keen interest in philosophy and literature from an early age. Although he studied law, he soon abandoned that discipline to devote himself to philosophical reflection and self-study.
He developed a view of knowledge based on sensory experience and rejected the notion of innate ideas, postulating that all our ideas are derived from sensory impressions.
In philosophy, Hume is famous for his scepticism and analysis of human reasoning. He questioned causality, pointing out that our causal inferences are based on habits of mind rather than a necessary logical connection. He also developed a critique of religion, although he did so with caution because of the sensitivities of the time.
Despite the criticism he received for his scepticism and views on religion, Hume enjoyed a good reputation during his lifetime and was a key figure in the development of empiricism and modern thought. After his death, he left an important legacy that remains central to philosophy and the social sciences.
