Wallace Stevens was an American modernist poet who spent most of his life as an executive at The Hartford insurance company.
Educated at Harvard and New York Law School, he balanced a corporate career with a body of poetry that probes the relation between imagination and reality. His debut, Harmonium (1923), introduced signature poems such as “Sunday Morning,” “The Snow Man,” and “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird.”
Later books include Ideas of Order (1936) and The Auroras of Autumn (1950). His Collected Poems (1954) earned both the 1955 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.
