Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda — cover

Autobiography of a Yogi

Autobiography of a Yogi is a spiritual memoir by Paramahansa Yogananda, first published in 1946. The book is illustrated with photographs.

In this memoir, Paramahansa Yogananda chronicles his life from childhood through his travels in India and his encounters with spiritual teachers.

He places special emphasis on his training with the yoga master Sri Yukteswar and his later work teaching yoga in the United States.

The book moves between biography, philosophy, and accounts of spiritual experiences, while offering a first-person view of Indian religious life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

"I find my earliest memories covering the anachronistic features of a previous incarnation. Clear recollections came to me of a distant life, a yogi amidst the Himalayan snows. These glimpses of the past, by some dimensionless link, also afforded me a glimpse of the future."

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was legally published within the United States (or the United Nations Headquarters in New York subject to Section 7 of the United States Headquarters Agreement) before 1964, and copyright was not renewed.

Why Read Autobiography of a Yogi in 2026?

Part travelogue, part spiritual lab notebook, Yogananda’s memoir invites curiosity over credulity and shows how practice—not spectacle—sustains wonder. It bridges India and America with a clear, disarming voice.

Today's connection

With yoga and meditation everywhere, this classic offers context: discipline, teachers, and a life organized around practice rather than performance. Read it with a balanced mind—open to experience, careful with claims—and as a historical bridge that shaped how many in the West met Indian philosophy. Treat the extraordinary stories as invitations to reflect, not proofs to argue. Its best pages model steadiness, gratitude, and daily effort—useful whether you’re a beginner or long-time practitioner.

Practice over performance

Routines, teachers, and patience, not quick fixes.

Cultural bridge

Places and people connect India and the West with care.

Reflective reading

Let wonder spark questions; keep your feet on the ground.

Perfect for Readers interested in spirituality and yoga Those curious about Indian culture and religion Individuals searching for personal and spiritual growth
