Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is a historical novel by Lew Wallace, published in 1880. It places the fictional life of the Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur alongside episodes from the birth, ministry, and crucifixion of Jesus.

Judah's childhood friendship with the Roman Messala collapses under politics and pride. When a roof tile accidentally strikes the governor during a procession, Messala treats it as an assassination attempt: Judah is sent to the galleys, and his mother and sister disappear into prison.

After saving the Roman commander Quintus Arrius at sea, Judah gains freedom and returns east seeking his family and revenge. His preparation for the great chariot race makes him a public rival to Messala, while repeated encounters with Jesus challenge his idea of liberation through force.

The novel combines military adventure, family separation, spectacle, and religious epic. Its central movement is from vengeance toward compassion and from the expectation of an earthly king to a different understanding of redemption.
