Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil is a literary work written by W. E. B. Du Bois and first published in 1920.
This work presents a wonderful combination of autobiographical essays, historical reflections, political opinions and a part of poetry, where the author will bring us closer to the complex situation that occurred in the United States in the post-slavery era.
At that time, there was a very strong struggle for civil rights, so Du Bois, through his writings, will collect all these changes and take the opportunity to deeply criticize the policies of segregation and discrimination that prevailed at that time.
In the work, we can see how important issues such as the role of religion in the African American community or the importance of education and leadership as a means to achieve progress and equality for all are addressed.
In "Darkwater," we will see the author's vision ahead of his time, raising issues that are still relevant in contemporary discourse, demonstrating Du Bois' commitment to social justice and his contribution to African American literature and studies of the African diaspora.
"I was born by a golden river and in the shadow of two great hills, five years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The house was quaint, with clapboards running up and down, neatly trimmed, and there were five rooms, a tiny porch, a rosy front yard, and unbelievably delicious strawberries in the rear. A South Carolinian, lately come to the Berkshire Hills, owned all thisโtall, thin, and black, with golden earrings, and given to religious trances. We were his transient tenants for the time."
