Giant's bread

Giants' Bread is a psychological and romantic novel by Agatha Christie, first published in 1930 under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. It was the first of six novels Christie wrote under this name, departing from her famous detective stories to explore love, artistic ambition, personal sacrifice, and the complexities of human relationships.

The novel follows Vernon Deyre, a sensitive and talented young man who grows up in the sheltered surroundings of his family's English country estate. Despite initially fearing music, Vernon eventually discovers an extraordinary passion for composing and dreams of becoming a great musician. However, his artistic ambitions are complicated by financial difficulties, family expectations, and his feelings for two very different women: Nell Vereker, his beautiful childhood sweetheart, and Jane Harding, a passionate and independent professional singer.

As Vernon struggles to reconcile his desire for love with his determination to achieve artistic greatness, the outbreak of World War I dramatically changes his life. Reported dead during the conflict, he experiences a series of unexpected circumstances that force him to confront his past, his identity, and the consequences of his decisions. Torn between personal happiness and his creative calling, Vernon must ultimately face the emotional cost of pursuing extraordinary talent.

Combining romance, psychological drama, and a profound exploration of artistic genius, Giants' Bread examines the difficult choices between ambition, duty, and affection. Through its complex characters and emotionally charged relationships, Christie presents a moving portrait of the sacrifices demanded by creativity, revealing a more introspective and dramatic side of her literary talent.

"There were only three people of real importance in Vernon's world: Nurse, God, and Mr. Green.
There were, of course, the nursemaids. Winnie, the present one, and behind her Jane and Annie and Sarah and Gladys. "
