Hop-Frog is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe first published in 1849.
The protagonist, named Hop Frog, is a dwarf who serves as a jester in the court of a king who is fond of jokes. The dwarf, estranged from his homeland and constantly humiliated, goes into a rage after both the king and the rest of the court offend his beloved Tripetta, who is also a dwarf.
His revenge consists of convincing the king to disguise himself and his court as orangutans at a costume party. At the party, Hop-Frog executes his long-desired revenge.
The story explores the theme of revenge, as do other Poe stories such as The Cask of Amontillado. It is speculated that the story is also a literary revenge against some members of the New York literary circle, and in particular, against Elizabeth F. Ellet who had rejected Poe's amorous proposal.
"I never knew any one so keenly alive to a joke as the king was. He seemed to live only for joking. To tell a good story of the joke kind, and to tell it well, was the surest road to his favour".
