In this macabre tale, the narrator describes an experiment he performed on Mr. Valdemar, a man on the verge of death from tuberculosis.

Under hypnosis, the narrator manages to put Valdemar into a mesmeric state shortly before his death, leaving him in a state between life and death for several months.

But things get complicated when the narrator tries to wake him up from this hypnotic state...
