The Lady of the Shroud is a novel written by Bram Stoker and first published in 1909.

We are in a Balkan country, at the beginning of the 20th century.

A young man, of humble origin, is made a proposal: he will obtain a great fortune (a million pounds) if he settles in the castle of Vissarion, in the dark Country of the Blue Mountains.

The novel presents us with a gothic plot, through conversations, diaries and press releases, in which strange and disturbing adventures abound, such as the event that gives the book its title.

Although Stoker's touch is noticeable, this is not as terrifying a story as Dracula is.

"A strange story comes from the Adriatic.  It appears that on the night of the 9th, as the Italia Steamship Company’s vessel “Victorine” was passing a little before midnight the point known as “the Spear of Ivan,” on the coast of the Blue Mountains, the attention of the Captain, then on the bridge, was called by the look-out man to a tiny floating light close inshore."
