The Monkey's Paw is a horror story written by W. W. Jacobs and first published in 1902. Short in length, it tells the story of a dead monkey's paw that turns out to be a talisman that allows the owner to ask for three wishes as if it were a magic lamp. However, these three wishes are counterproductively fulfilled.
The White family, made up of the married couple and an adult son, live quietly in a small town. One day they receive a visit from Sergeant Morris, a great childhood friend of Mr. White.
Due to his profession in the army, this sergeant has traveled a lot around the world. He tells the White family the story that in India he had heard the story of a monkey's paw with supernatural powers and that he is in possession of one.
The paw only has power so that a last possessor asks for the three wishes of him. However, while he tells it, the face of Sergeant Morris shows the terror that fills him talking about her...
"Without, the night was cold and wet, but in the small parlour of Laburnam Villa the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly. Father and son were at chess, the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the white-haired old lady knitting placidly by the fire".
