Mystery Horror Short Story Death Guilt Obsession Mystery of the Human Mind
The Oblong Box is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1844.
A narrator boards a coastal packet ship and grows obsessed with a fellow passenger’s mysterious coffin-shaped crate, noting furtive movements, whispered requests, and a secrecy that begs for speculation.
Convinced the box hides a priceless painting, the narrator indulges in confident but misguided deductions. His theories seem to explain every odd detailuntil a violent storm forces a desperate scramble to abandon ship.
As the crew fights for survival, the box becomes an object of fatal devotion. Choices made in those frantic minutes at sea lead to tragedy, and the narrator’s tidy explanations unravel in the face of events he never truly understood.
Only afterward does the ghastly truth surface: the crate encased a beloved’s embalmed body, carried with solemn intent. Poe turns curiosity into horror to reveal how assumptions, grief, and obsession can distort reality.
"Some years ago, I engaged passage from Charleston, S. C, to the city of New York, in the fine packet-ship "Independence," Captain Hardy. We were to sail on the fifteenth of the month (June), weather permitting; and on the fourteenth, I went on board to arrange some matters in my stateroom."
