The Rover is a novel written by Joseph Conrad and first published in 1923. Set in southern France during the French Revolutionary Wars, it was Conrad’s final completed novel.
The story follows Peyrol, an aging sailor and former privateer who returns to France after decades at sea. Seeking peace and solitude, he settles at a remote farmhouse on the Giens Peninsula, where he becomes involved in the troubled lives of its inhabitants.
Peyrol’s quiet retirement is interrupted when a French naval officer asks him to assist in a dangerous plan to deceive the British fleet. As political conflict and personal tensions intensify, the old sailor must decide whether to protect his newfound refuge or return to a life of courage and sacrifice.
Combining maritime adventure with psychological drama, the novel explores loyalty, duty, isolation, and redemption. Peyrol’s final actions reveal the dignity of a man who finds purpose through one last heroic mission.
"After entering at break of day the inner roadstead of the Port of Toulon, exchanging several loud hails with one of the guardboats of the Fleet, which directed him where he was to take up his berth, Master-Gunner Peyrol let go the anchor of the sea-worn and battered ship in his charge, between the arsenal and the town, in full view of the principal quay."
