The Sorrows of Young Werther is a romantic novel written by Goethe and originally published in 1774. It is the first novel by the German writer and is based on a love experience of Goethe himself.
Written in the form of a diary, the novel introduces us to the passionate and unhappy young Werther. He works as a draughtsman and moves to another city where he meets Charlotte and falls totally in love with her.
The problem comes because Charlotte is engaged to his friend Albert and this love triangle will end with the sanity of poor Werther.
With a heartbreaking and passionate tone, it has a sad and hopeless tone that is even said to have caused a wave of suicides in Germany at the time of its publication.
This edition of The Sorrows of Young Werther is based on the English translation by R. Dillon Boylan.
