The Wendigo is a horror story written by Algernon Blackwood and first published in 1910.
This tale set in the vast forests of northern Canada. The story follows a group of men who venture into the remote wilderness on a hunting expedition.
During the expedition, one of the guides, Défago, is taken over by a supernatural entity known as the Wendigo, a legendary creature from indigenous mythology that symbolises insatiable hunger and cannibalism.
As the Wendigo's presence is felt, the characters experience psychological and physical terror...
"A considerable number of hunting parties were out that year without finding so much as a fresh trail; for the moose were uncommonly shy, and the various Nimrods returned to the bosoms of their respective families with the best excuses the facts of their imaginations could suggest. Dr. Cathcart, among others, came back without a trophy; but he brought instead the memory of an experience which he declares was worth all the bull moose that had ever been shot. "
