A Gentle Spirit is a short story written by Fyodor Dostoevsky and first published in 1879.

This short novel, written as a monologue, presents us with the disjointed thoughts that occur in the disturbed mind of a middle-aged man when he finds his wife's corpse upon returning home.

In this series of thoughts, the man will inspect himself and his life as a couple, and we will know the background of the story. Another of Dostoevsky's gems in which the Russian writer dissects human psychology.

It is a dark story that shows us both love and lovelessness and criticizes the emotional abuse suffered by most women in the early nineteenth century.

"Oh, while she is still here, it is still all right; I go up and look at her every minute; but tomorrow they will take her away — and how shall I be left alone? Now she is on the table in the drawing-room, they put two card tables together, the coffin will be here tomorrow — white, pure white “gros de Naples” — but that’s not it …"

This edition of A Gentle Spirit is based on Constance Garnett's translation.
