Democracy in America is a history and politics book written by Alexis de Tocqueville and originally published in 1835.
This essay, based on Tocqueville's travels to the United States as a French diplomat, chronicles the author's analysis and understanding of U.S. society and the novel democratic system they implemented.
Tocqueville details the different levels of government, from the most local to the federal level. Many of the points he mentions are still valid today.
The book covers a variety of topics such as government, religion or slavery, always from the point of view of Democracy and its impact on all social spheres.
Tocqueville was aware that these changes in society that were taking place in the United States would eventually reach Europe and other parts of the world and that the transition to democratic governments would have a profound impact on culture.
This edition of Democracy in America is based on the edition edited by John C. Spencer and translated into English by Henry Reeve.
