Daniel Defoe was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy. He was a really prolific writer and he wrote several hundred works, like books or journals.
His most famous work is Robinson Crusoe, a novel published in 1719.
He is considered one of the earliest proponents of the English novel, and helped to popularise the form in Britain.
