Adventure Picaresque Survival Identity Wealth Morality
Captain Singleton is an adventure novel written by Daniel Defoe and originally published in 1720.
Bob Singleton is the prototypical 18th century adventurer who, after setting sail as a near-slave, becomes a pirate and sails the seas around the world and has a series of adventures while terrorising other ships.
This novel abounds with action, battles and masterfully described settings. Singleton's life was endangered on numerous occasions in the heat of battle, in mutinies or in encounters with dangerous natives.
It is a story of overcoming (albeit by unethical means) as a cabin boy returns to his homeland with riches and a great life behind him.
"As it is usual for great persons, whose lives have been remarkable, and whose actions deserve recording to posterity, to insist much upon their originals, give full accounts of their families, and the histories of their ancestors, so, that I may be methodical, I shall do the same, though I can look but a very little way into my pedigree, as you will see presently."

From kidnapping to command, Singleton crosses continents by compass, bargain, and occasional brutality. Defoe shows the logistics of long travel, pirate governance, and uneasy conscience. Adventure becomes an audit of gain and loss across seas and sands.
Global supply chains and resource extraction still test ethics. This tale frames profit, peril, and responsibility.
