Satire Epistolary novel Romance Youth Folly of youth Irony Parody
Love and Friendship is a juvenile story written by Jane Austen in 1790. The British author wrote it when she was only 14 years old.
Written in epistolary form, it is a series of letters written by Laura to Marianne, the daughter of a friend. The misspelling in the title is a parody of the romance novels Jane Austen read as a child.
Austen was only 14 years old and probably wrote it just for fun without ever thinking of publishing it. It is so ingenious for Austen's age that you can sense the talent that would come in later novels.
"How often, in answer to my repeated intreaties that you would give my Daughter a regular detail of the Misfortunes and Adventures of your Life, have you said "No, my freind never will I comply with your request till I may be no longer in Danger of again experiencing such dreadful ones."
