Mr. Spaceship

Mr. Spaceship is a science fiction novelette written by Philip K. Dick and first published in the January 1953 issue of Imagination.

In a distant future, humanity is locked in a prolonged war against an alien species whose organic technology has given it a decisive advantage. Searching for a new weapon, a team of scientists develops a spacecraft controlled by a human brain, using the mind of a dying professor who volunteers for the experiment.

Once connected to the ship, however, the professor gains complete control and begins pursuing a purpose very different from the military mission intended by his creators. His actions force the scientists to confront the destructive nature of humanity and its obsession with war, while raising questions about intelligence, free will, and whether civilization can begin again on better terms.

Mr. Spaceship is in the public domain in the United States. The story was legally published in the United States before 1964 and its copyright was not renewed, a status explicitly noted by Wikisource. Project Gutenberg likewise lists the work as public domain in the USA.
