MS. Found in a Bottle is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1833.
Cast as a “found document,” it unfolds as the final pages of a sailor’s journal recovered from the sea, a form that heightens its atmosphere of authentic dread and creeping inevitability.
The narrator sails from Batavia and survives a cataclysmic storm, only to be swept aboard a vast, antiquated vessel whose ghostly crew neither speaks nor seems to notice him. He records the ship’s uncanny details while the craft hurtles ever southward into colder, stranger waters.
Driven through ice and gale, the ship is drawn toward a colossal vortex near the pole. As the plunge becomes unavoidable, the writer consigns his account to the waves, a last attempt to testify that human reason falters before the sublime and the unknown.
Poe fuses nautical realism with speculative science to craft a tale that is at once an adventure and a meditation on cosmic forces beyond human control, the limits of perception and logic, and the terrible allure of annihilation.
"Of my country and of my family I have little to say. Ill usage and length of years have driven me from the one, and estranged me from the other. Hereditary wealth afforded me an education of no common order, and a contemplative turn of mind enabled me to methodise the stores which early study very diligently garnered up. "
