Odour of Chrysanthemums is a short story written by D. H. Lawrence and first published in 1911.

This story follows Elizabeth Bates, a young woman waiting for her husband to return from the mine. As the day progresses into night, Elizabeth reflects on her marriage, which has become increasingly distant and conflicted.

However, the discovery of her husband's lifeless body in the mine triggers a series of profound reflections on her life and the choices she has made.

The novel explores themes of human relationships, alienation and the disillusionment of the English working class. Using the chrysanthemum as a symbol of death and renewal, Lawrence paints an intimate portrait of a woman confronting the brutal realities of her own existence.

"The small locomotive engine, Number 4, came clanking, stumbling down from Selston with seven full waggons. It appeared round the corner with loud threats of speed, but the colt that it startled from among the gorse, which still flickered indistinctly in the raw afternoon, outdistanced it at a canter."
