Phaedo, also subtitled "On the Soul", is a dialogue written by Plato and published around 387 B.C. Its central theme is the immortality of the soul and is one of the Greek philosopher's best known dialogues.
Socrates is in his cell, condemned to drink hemlock, and is facing his last hours of life. He stands with his pupils, to whom he gives his reasons why he has accepted his death sentence rather than flee or attempt to appeal.
Phaedo, one of his disciples, was present at these last words and is the one who recounts the conversation to Plato as a direct witness of what happened.
Through his words, Socrates offers reassurance to his pupils that he will go to a better place and that the soul cannot be destroyed and is eternal.
This edition of Plato's Phaedo is based on the English translation by Benjamin Jowett.
