Shadow: A Parable is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in 1835.
The story is about a group of friends who gather for a party at the mansion of a man named Oinos. The group is trying to find comfort and support from each other after a plague has devastated the city. As they sit in the room by the light of a bright moon, they discuss the devastation of the plague and other philosophical thoughts.
But suddenly the group notices a strange shadow appearing on the wall. Without a spotlight beside it to create it, the shadow looks like some kind of creature...
In this short and melancholy tale, Poe takes the opportunity to reflect on death and human existence in a story that combines terror, mystery, and deep reflection.
"Ye who read are still among the living; but I who write shall have long since gone my way into the region of shadows. For indeed strange things shall happen, and secret things be known, and many centuries shall pass away, ere these memori- als be seen of men."
