Sweat is a short story written by Zora Neale Hurston and first published in 1926.
The story follows Delia Jones, a hardworking washerwoman in Florida who has spent years supporting herself and her abusive husband. While Delia is deeply religious and devoted to her work, her husband treats her with cruelty, mocks her beliefs, and openly carries on an affair. Their marriage has become a life defined by violence, resentment, and emotional abuse.
Knowing that Delia is terrified of snakes, her husband brings a rattlesnake into their home as part of his campaign to frighten and torment her. His actions eventually lead to an unexpected and fatal reversal, forcing Delia to confront the consequences of years of mistreatment.
Set in an African American community in the rural South, Sweat explores domestic abuse, gender inequality, endurance, and poetic justice. Hurston uses regional dialect and vivid symbolism to portray a woman whose years of suffering ultimately give way to a powerful sense of liberation.
"She squatted in the kitchen floor beside the great pile of clothes, sorting them into small heaps according to color, and humming a song in a mournful key, but wondering through it all where Sykes, her husband, had gone with her horse and buckboard."
