Ten Years Later

Ten Years Later is the second of four sections in this edition of Alexandre Dumas's final d'Artagnan romance, originally serialized between 1847 and 1850.

The restoration of Charles II and the death of Cardinal Mazarin have changed the political balance of Europe. In France, the young Louis XIV begins to claim personal power, while d'Artagnan returns to royal service and watches the court reorganize itself around a more determined king.

Raoul de Bragelonne follows the court to Fontainebleau, where his childhood love Louise de la Vallière serves Princess Henrietta. New attractions, rivalries, and whispered alliances place their expected marriage under pressure as private desire becomes a matter of royal politics.

At the same time, the struggle between the wealthy superintendent Nicolas Fouquet and the ambitious Jean-Baptiste Colbert grows sharper. Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and d'Artagnan remain connected, but age and conflicting loyalties draw them toward different futures.

Less focused on swordplay than the earlier romances, Ten Years Later turns court etiquette, hidden affection, and financial power into sources of suspense. It prepares the emotional and political conflicts that lead toward Louise de la Vallière and the mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask.
