The Gun by Philip K. Dick — cover

The Gun

The Gun is a science fiction short story by Philip K. Dick, first published in 1952.

The story follows the crew of a spacecraft exploring a distant planet that appears to have been devastated by war. As they approach the surface, their ship is suddenly attacked by a powerful automated weapon that has survived long after the civilization that created it has disappeared.

After landing, the explorers discover that the gun was designed to defend the ruins from any possible threat. Although its original makers are gone, the machine continues to perform its task with deadly precision, forcing the crew to find a way to disable it before they can safely investigate the planet.

Through this encounter, Dick explores the dangers of autonomous weapons and technology that outlives its creators, raising questions about war, destruction, and the consequences of building machines capable of continuing their purpose without human control.
